How Arizona State and Arizona will play in 2016
- by admin
The Arizona State Sun Devils have just a few weeks left in 2016.
The road to the Pac-12 championship game is long, but with three top-10 teams on the way, this could be a team that can get by without a top-five pick.
Arizona State is in the midst of a very interesting offseason, and with a strong offseason, the Sun Devils could be in a position to make some big moves at the draft in April.
Here are the five most important offseason moves Arizona State needs to make:1.
Get the defense on the fieldThe Sun Devils’ defense has been solid in 2016, and they have a chance to make a big splash at the NFL Draft.
If they can improve their coverage of running backs and tight ends, they could be one of the best defenses in the Pac 12.
However, the offensive line needs a shakeup and could be an issue for this team in 2016: The offense has struggled to generate big plays, and that could be due to the lack of experience at quarterback.
If the offense can be better, they can give the defense a chance.2.
Find a better quarterbackA lot of the struggles Arizona State has faced in 2016 have been on the offensive side of the ball.
The Sun Devils ranked 28th in total offense in 2016 with 6.2 yards per carry and just 5.6 yards per pass attempt.
With a quarterback in Trevor Knight and a running game that has been better in recent years, the offense could be able to step up and have some success in the upcoming year.3.
Make the transition to an offenseWith the offensive unit struggling to generate yards, the running game needs to improve.
The 2016 offense ranked 32nd in total yards and 26th in yards per attempt.
However the Sun Devil offense is not built to take the load off of a quarterback.
This is where Arizona State could get the best of their running backs in 2017.
If this can be improved, they might be able find a quarterback that can succeed at the position.4.
Sign the best free agents Arizona State should be able get a good return on the quarterback they are drafting in 2018.
There is no reason to pass on a talented receiver, especially one that can be a top talent on the gridiron.
The quarterback is a big need for Arizona State.
They will have to make the decision between one of those quarterbacks or a quarterback with more upside.5.
Find an answer at receiverThe defense was really solid last season.
The defense led the Pac 10 in interceptions and forced fumbles, allowing just seven touchdowns in 10 games.
This was good enough for No. 4 overall in the AP poll, but the Sun Doves defense has issues at linebacker, cornerback, safety and even tight end.
The secondary has some needs as well, and one of them could be at receiver.
Arizona will have a need at cornerback and another at safety, and adding some pass rush would be nice.
The biggest need on the defense in 2017 will be at tight end, and this is where the Sun Areas needs the most help.
The team is not going to be able keep their tight ends in the lineup all season.
With an offensive line that has struggled, the tight ends need help.
The Sun Doos need a solid tight end to pair with running back Dontae Harris, and the Sun dos need to make this a priority for next year.
If Arizona State does find a quality target, it could help jumpstart this offense and give the SunDooms a real chance to compete at the top of the Pac12.
