Tennessee Vols head coach Kirby Smart is ‘proud’ of players for beating Penn State

Tennessee coach Kirby Strong was proud of his players after defeating Penn State 70-56 on Saturday night.

Strong and his team, which had to settle for a 62-64 loss to No. 2 Florida State, were handed the opportunity to get revenge for the last time this season when they defeated No. 7 Michigan State on the road in the College Football Playoff.

The Vols had a shot to tie the series on the final play of the first half but the Wolverines converted a three-point play with less than five minutes to play.

Penn State scored the game’s first six points but had the lead down to three on a 3-pointer by Tye Smith with 8:16 remaining.

The Nittany Lions hit a pair of free throws with 0.3 seconds left to tie it but the Vols held on to win it 70-54 on Saturday.

Penn State had a chance to extend its lead to eight but the Tigers cut it to five with 2:03 remaining.

With the win, the Vol and Penn State are tied for first in the Big Ten standings.
