Gophers football fans can rejoice as the team will return to action this fall.
The Gophers will open the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 2, against Western Michigan at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
The game will be the team’s first trip to the Big Ten Conference Championship Game since 2014.
“I am thrilled to be back at TCFC,” Gophers head coachsaid.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to compete against the best teams in the nation and have the chance to play in the Big 10 Championship Game.
Minnesota’s home field is a testament to our strength and our commitment to being a Big Ten Football Power.
We are also very excited about the upcoming season and are looking forward to playing for our fans again.”
Minnesota will also face Northwestern on Oct. 31 at TCK Stadium in Indianapolis, a game that will be its first visit to the conference championship game since 2013.
The season will also mark the third year in a row that Minnesota will host a Big 12 Conference championship game.
The Gophers have also won the conference title three of the past four years.
“We are very excited to host our first Big 12 Championship Game in Minneapolis, and we are excited that we will be able to host the Big 12 title game in the same city in 2021,” Minnesota head coachannounced.
“I want to thank our fans and the fans at TCFO for their support and I look forward to having them back on Saturday.”
Minnesota has posted an 11-3 overall record this season and 11-4 in conference play.
The Redbirds are currently ranked No. 5 in the country and No. 11 in the Associated Press Poll.
Minnesota has won nine straight games at TCFK Stadium, including five of the last six.
The first six contests have been decided by a touchdown or less.
The Redbirds have won two games at home this season.
The teams last meeting was a 41-7 win at TC Farragut Stadium in 2019.
The Vikings have won five of six on the road, including the last two matchups with the Wolverines.
The 2017 season will mark the second time in the past three years that Minnesota has won the Big 8 Conference title.
The Golden Gophers won the title in 2013, and are ranked No, 4 in the AP Poll.
The Minnesota defense has allowed just nine.0 points per game this season, ranking second nationally.
The unit ranks fourth nationally in yards allowed per game (415.3).
The Gopher offense ranks second nationally in passing efficiency (122.4) and fifth in scoring offense (34.7 points per contest).
Minnesota has a 7-2 record in Big Ten Championship Games.
